How Jobs Are Matched? The Upwork algorithm matches jobs with freelancers based on skills, experience, and profile keywords. Ensure your profile is optimized with keywords relevant to your services and expertise to improve your chances of being detected and selected.

3. Standing Out in a Crowded Market

Craft a compelling profile
Although this is very basic, your profile is the first impression you make on the potential clients. The employers get 100s of profiles, and getting selected or not is many a time, just a matter of a few seconds. Therefore,
- Use a professional, friendly profile picture.
- Write a strong bio that highlights your expertise.
- Specify details about your expertise and address the client’s requirements.
- Make your title more specific and focused; it should clearly highlight what you do, include relevant keywords, and showcase your specialty and expertise.
Examples:
- Incorrect: Developer
Correct and Compelling: Web developer, Full stack developer, Web & Mobile App Specialist, React, Flutter, etc. - Incorrect: Consultant
Correct and Compelling: Digital marketing consultant specialized in paid Acquisition
The Cover Letter: Upwork cover letters aren't about you (unless they mention doing it); it’s about their requirements and how they can benefit from hiring you.
Here’s an example of a cover letter that earned me $2,000:
If you are looking for someone who can quickly make exceptional progress, You can count on my development skills and experience. My past clients have been delighted.
Over my 5-year tenure in the software development industry, I have primarily focused on building web apps, cross-platform mobile apps, and desktop app development using React, React Native, and Flutter. My recent work, [Project Name] - [Project link]
Here’s the hack:
In the first paragraph, I deliberately avoided generic phrases like "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Hi, I am [name]." Instead, I focused on addressing exactly what the client was looking for—"someone who could make exceptional progress and drive growth." I kept it direct and to the point because, honestly, that's all they needed to hear.
The second paragraph is about me, which, admittedly, could be optional because they need to review 100s of applications and no one likes to read a lot. However, since the client specifically asked for a bit of background, I included a brief introduction to highlight my experience and expertise.
In the third section, I emphasized my readiness to work and deliver results that meet their expectations. I made sure to express my commitment to providing high-quality work.
Finally, I included links to my portfolio and social profiles so the client could review my work and build trust in my abilities. I also shared a recent project link to give them a concrete example of what I can deliver.
A strong cover letter is your representation. Think of how you would present yourself if you were in an interview. Here you can present yourself better, as you are writing to them.
Build a Strong Portfolio—Here again, friends, If you’re starting out, Your portfolio is one of the best ways to show potential clients what you can do. Consider doing a few personal projects or offering your services at a discounted rate to build up your work history.
Having a good portfolio makes the client see your practical work and not just the words. If you are new, you can go through a few portfolio websites and sites like ‘Behance’ or relative sites for inspiration.
Develop a Niche: Jobs on Upwork are like a sea, and if you are new and searching for jobs on Upwork, you might have to send the first few proposals to even get started. Therefore, get your niche clear and send proposals only to those niches; otherwise, sending proposals can often end up being an unnecessary expense.
Bidding for Success: When you are starting on Upwork, it might seem a bit intimidating as you are going to compete against experienced and skilled freelancers. But the key is to make your proposal stand out.
Use Connects Wisely: Every bid requires you to use "Connects” (the platform’s currency) for applying to the jobs on Upwork. Don’t apply for everything; only bid on jobs that truly match your skills and expertise. (Pro tip: select a job that may not be heavily competitive, i.e., few people will bid on it.).
When you’re just beginning, focus on smaller jobs that you can confidently complete. Just make sure not to apply for jobs with poor details.
Offer a Competitive but Reasonable Rate:
Don’t underprice your work to get jobs, but make it reasonable and negociable if you are just starting out. Ensure that clients can see value in hiring you.
How many jobs should I apply for?
Depending on your budget, I recommend at least 5 to 15, because most clients will not even see most of the applications. But if you bid smart, it might work in even fewer proposals, but it might go above 15 sometimes.
Bidding as a beginner on Upwork takes time, but with consistent effort and smart strategies, you'll begin to build a reputation that allows you to secure higher-paying jobs.
4. Build a strong reputation.
Now, as you are up on the game, here’s what you do to stay in the game:

Potentially Ask for Reviews: When finished with a specific project, ask the client to give you good reviews based on your work; this will lift you on the chart and attract future clients in your Upwork career.
5. Expand Your Upwork Network
Now this is something you won’t get much advice on, but your network plays a major role in the growth of your Upwork career.
Foster Long-Term Client Relationships: Build a strong relationship with clients who are satisfied with your work and ask the satisfied clients for referrals or repeat business.
Collaborate with Other Freelancers: Collaborating with other freelancers will give you more exposure to boost your Upwork career.
